There’s nothing quite like that new phone smell!
And new iPhones have an especially fresh smell- mostly because they’re just so darn great.
When switching between iPhones however, you might find that one or more accessories are not bundled with either phone.
Or, perhaps, you’re simply not keen to burn hard-earned money on accruing an entirely new set of accessories with your new device!
So, the question that you’ve arrived with today:
Do iPhone 11 cases fit iPhone XRs?
Luckily for you, the short answer is Yes!
Unlike when transitioning from an XR to X, the cases of the iPhone 11 and XR are interchangeable- depending on how focused you are on aesthetics and perfect fit, of course.
There are some features that don’t quite match up, which we’ll get into in a moment.
So, Can You Put An iPhone 11 Case On Your XR?
First things first: What are the similarities between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone XR?
Well, they are exactly the same size and weight, coming in at 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3mm and 194g. They also have the same shape and basic dimensions.
And it’s because of this that the iPhone 11 case fits onto the XR- or just about, anyway.
The difference then?
It’s all about the camera.
The iPhone 11 has two rear cameras, compared to the XR’s single lonely rear camera.
As such, the bigger camera cut-out on the iPhone 11’s case might look a little odd on the XR’s body, but it shouldn’t impact the quality of the pictures the phone can take at all.
Aesthetically, the Apple logo on the iPhone 11 and the iPhone XR sit in slightly different areas of the back case, and will not line up exactly if you are using an 11’s case on an XR.
Other than that though, you’re good to go with putting an iPhone 11 case onto an iPhone XR!
What about the other way around though?
Can you put an iPhone XR case onto an iPhone 11?
In this direction, the answer is not so simple.
And, once again, it’s all about the camera.
The single-camera cut-out on the case of the XR will not fit well into the camera configuration of the iPhone 11.
Most significantly affected by the mismatching protective cases is the flash of the iPhone 11, which will be completely covered by an XR-compatible case.
If your case is clear, this shouldn’t impact your photograph’s quality too significantly.
If, however, you have an incredible purple, blue, or red iPhone case, you can expect that all flash photography will have a color tone that matches the color the light is passing through.
An entirely color-blocked phone case will absorb all light, and render your flash useless.
So, while all iPhone 11 cases will fit onto iPhone XRs, the same cannot be said for the reverse!
Will iPhone XS Cases Fit The XR?
The iPhone XS and the iPhone XR were released as part of the same line, but that’s where their similarities end.
It’s a bit strange to think that the iPhone 11 and the iPhone XR are more similar than the XS, but so it is.
The major difference between the two is in their dimensions; the iPhone XS is considerably smaller than the iPhone XR, but quite a deal more powerful.
The iPhone XS comes in at a petite 143 x 70.9 x 7.7mm, whereas the XR has a more hefty dimension of 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3mm.
Straight off the bat we can see that, based on the differences in dimensions, these two phones will not have compatible accessories.
And, if the difference in sizes is not enough to convince you that you’re not going to be changing cases between the XS and the XR, there are also the dreaded camera differences to account for.
The XS has two rear cameras to the XR’s one, further distancing the accessory compatibility between the two devices.
One Case To Fit Them All!
In general, Apple makes great efforts to ensure a sense of continuity in its products.
You will not find huge aesthetic differences between the iPhone models from 6 to 11, for example.
(The differences between the 11 and the 12 are more significant, but the 12 and 13 less so again.)
There will be changes slightly in size and camera orientation for sure, but overall you can expect a very similar experience from one phone model to the next.
This consideration on the part of Apple will allow you to swap your phone case between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone XR.
It’s just not a completely seamless fit, by any means!
