Folks,

Since I upgraded my IPod Touch to version 4.0 of the software the battery life on my IPod Touch has dropped dramatically.

Are you aware of this issue and have any of your other listeners had the same problem.

The limericks in Podcast 79 were wonderful…the best yet….especially the extra one.

John

Hi Matt,
I have been researching both the iphone 4 and the HTC desire. AT first the iPhone won hands down as it is a nicer looking phone, better camera, I have a mac at home, but gradually the HTC desire is creeping closer as I use gmail and google calendar, and the layout is more user friendly.
In your opinion which is the better phone and why?
Thanks in advance for your time :)
Sally

I want to move to Blackberry from my iPhone. Should I buy a Blackberry now or is there something cummin that I should wait for?

Listener questions

Hello guys!
I’ve been a listener since Chris was presenting the Podcast. Love the show and the current line up. I must say it did take me a while to warm up to Andy…. I think this is only because I’m an ex Carphone Warehouse employee, and his bashing of them was difficult to hear. Especially when I gave excellent customer service and product knowledge being a phone geek. It maybe obvious, but not every store is the same….. Any who, I’m over that and now I know more about Andy and his back ground, I really do value his input into most conversations you guys have!
Enough ass kissing…. on with my question.
I think this one is best answered by Andy, but if any one else can offer an answer I’m all ears.
I’m heading off on holiday to Turkey in August. Last holiday we had, we were in a villa where paid to have WiFi there, but that isn’t an option to us where we are going. As we progress in this digital age, not to been connected to the digital world is horrid thought. Obviously I could roam on O2 (I’m an iPhone 4 owner) but since I don’t have MUG tattooed on my head (and sleep on a bed of money) this really isn’t going to be an option for me. There is 5 of us going. Me, the better half, her parents and her brother. 3 of use are iPhone users, and because of this I was thinking that the best solution for us would be some thing like a MiFi portable hotspot with a Turkish data SIM in it. What do you think guys? Would this be the best option?
I set about trying to do some research and it seems like there is only two main network providers in Turkey. One is Vodafone. Navigating their website is tough. Even with Google translate. I think there is a good pre pay dongle you can get from them, but they don’t seem to list any thing like a MiFi. I was planning to purchase an unlocked MiFi before I went away and get a SIM when I was over there. The question I have, is that how do I know the MiFi will support the Turkish Voda network settings??
All seems a little confusing for me, and hard to gather information about foreign countries before you travel. Is there a website out there that offers more in depth advice about this type of question?
I’m leaving it a little late because I leave on the 19th of August, but I’d love for any help you can offer, or maybe fellow listeners.
Thanks very much for your time guys, and thank you again for the podcast you produce.
David King

Gareth intro: “We’re joined by Mike Fairman CEO of GiffGaff, you may have heard us talk about GiffGaff quite a bit here on MTA and Tracyandmatt.co.uk – indeed like myself I think that both Matt and Andy are GiffGaff customers!?”   any more G?”

  • In a nutshell, what makes GiffGaff different to any other network offering?
  • What is your back ground? Are you a previous employee of one of the networks? If so,

a)what was your position there?
b)Why did you decide to set up giffgaff?

  • How can GiffGaff offer better value than 02? But still running on the same 02 network: why choose O2 as the carrier?
Is Giffgaff an O2 sponsored venture or are you completely independent?a)if Independent, why choose O2 as the carrier?
b)can you switch to another network or are you under contract for so many years?
    c) why would a network carrier allow you to use their network if they know you are going to offer a much better product than they do?
(to demonstrate my point,  I see Virgin as a different model to TMobile, not better, just tailored to a different customer base. GiffGaff trounces O2 in every department which ever way you look at it ‘unless’ you want a contract subsidised handset – are they are probably one of the worst out there for that anyway? oh, and the reason I’m with o2 PAYG is to simply get the cheaper home broadband! Rarely use the sim!)
    If O2 venture:
a)Why undercut themselves and generally make a much better network model rather than do it at O2?
(at such cheap and competitive pricing, is GiffGaff sustainable? What number or subscribers to you have and whats the break even number? so far I have received more in payouts than I have paid out in topups for very little effort. Is this sustainable? )
  • When will international roaming be activated
  • Does giffgaff have throttled data? I get 2.2mb on Vodafone and only 0.5mb on giffgaff.
  • My iphone 4 says i’m on the O2 network. My Dell Streak used to say Giffgaff….. Although I have nothing against O2 is this something Giffgaff can change?
  • Will you allow tethering in the future?
  • Why can’t I buy more than one goody bag in a month? I needed to use my phone for an emergency the other day and used up all my minutes. Now i have to wait 2 weeks before my new goody bag starts. This means my Mum will not get hear weekly call! :O)
  • Visual voicemail for iphone. Will giff gaff support it?
  • Will Giffgaff introduce a £20.00 or £25.00 goodybag for more minutes? £15.00 to £35 is quite a jump.
  • Will you allow me to buy 12 months worth of goodybags at 1/2 price? Why not?
  • I had an idea that you could design a giffgaff wallpaper for your fans to use on their phones. This is a freebie idea to take back with you.
  • Oh, and congratulations to being the only network to actually look up the definition of the word ‘unlimited’.
  • Do Giff Gaff have any plans to support BlackBerry in the future, bearing in mind that O2 do not support PAYG BB Services? – James
  • there was an announcement that 02 and vodafone would be sharing cell towers, at the moment I can use vodafone but get no o2 signal at home which means no giffgaff, does he know anything about when it may happen?

What phone do you use?

Hi Guys,

Feedback for you: Brilliant podcast, always makes me laugh, and sometimes informative!

A question also if I may? Since getting my iPhone4 I have noticed that my data usage has shot up. On the 3gs I don’t think I used 500 meg in 6 months but with the 4 I hit over 800mb in a week! This is with no real difference in usage patterns as far as I can tell. The O2 tech support said it was because the cellular usage figure includes WiFi but I find that hard to believe. As of today, having reset the stats, it has recorded 190k downloaded on cellular data, but has not been outside of my home WiFi coverage! Have any of you noticed this? On the plus side, O2 say they cant see any huge data use, but I’m worried I will get a huge bill in a months time.

David.

PS. Andy, the Pre is still fine. Mainly an alarm clock but it gets an occasional outing as a phone and would still be my next choice after the iPhone.

I am having some trouble since apple released upgrade 4 for iphone 3gs.  I use to be able to go to my address book for location to set an appointment and now only some of my contact will work the way they use to and some the map vibrates and it will not transfer all data to location. Any ideas on what I can do? I have applied all resent updates from the itunes website.

Hello Matt, i was hoping for some advice please. I am coming out of my Iphone next week, i think they are looking outdated and lacking any real design to the user face. I am torn between the HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy s. I have a Mac at home and at work which i use Entourage calendar for appointments, birthdays etc. This is where the Iphone wins as syncing it i really easy but im not sure what path to take with my two options of phone as above. Do you have any ideas what would be best, any new software that may be due to help the sync and in general which of the two phones to go for. At the moment i am favouring the Desire but have never owned either of the makes before so a bit scared of change. Your help and advice would be appreciated, cheers

Dear  mobile tech addicts.

I am unable to view video on mobile,ie you tube etc..In your reply you said that i should find out which access point i am on/using. (Q)Where do i find this information from,do i need to go to there website(02). or do i call 02 customer service or visit a 02 shop. My contract is via Carphone warehouse. What do I say to them, how can I best explain it to them.please advice.

Thank You.

Chris Writes:

Hi Andy, i know your a helpful guy so I wondered  if you could help me out with Vodafone? Following your great advice from a podcast I managed to cancel my Vodafone contract early due to the unlimited data bundles being capped at 500mb.

I wrote a letter (from template) and then called a few days later as I had not had a response. The lady I spoke to cancelled my contract without much fuss and I was very happy. 2 days later a guy called me about the letter I sent and I said no need as it had been cancelled already.

Now I just got a final bill from Vodafone that includes £168.61  charge for cancellation prior to contract end date. I just spoke to customer services and they said I cancelled my contract before the changes took affect so I have been charged for cancellation. They say that the announcement was just advisory. Any Idea’s to where to go next?  The Swansea call centre would not budge even after being bumped up to the manager.

HTC is not going to publish what they have fixed (or broken) with this new upgrade. I contacted HTC to find out if there is any release notes for this upgrade or if they can tell me what “enhancement” they are bringing in with this upgrade and below is what I got the response…

“Thank you for contacting us. In regards to release notes I can help you with that. We can not issue release notes for these updates as each one is different depending on the network branding that has been performed. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC.”

Hi thanks for trying to answer my question.. I won’t ask any further as nobody seemed to know. I would like to just let you know I live in Basingstoke for my sins. Hi guys Gareth,Andy James etc. (Umm … Matt!)

I always listen to your podcasts, keep up the great work.

I have a sony erriccson c905 and this year, last month had an upgrade(02) and now have unlimited internet data.

The phone is fine when i am only looking on websites, but if i were to go on you tube and try and play a video it will not play.

Also on the phone is the bbc iplayer and if i wanted to watch bbc1 etc it says about having the wifi turned off, which it was.

Why can i not watch any videos or live stuff.

On you tube in red writing at top says VIDEOS DISABLED BY OWNER,I to my knowledge have no idea what this is or what it means

but would like to know how i can enable it.

Thank You.

Amin

Another Chris

Hi guys, nice podcasting I listen to the 4 of you as I do my weekly cleaning. I love mobiles as much, if not more than you … in fact i think i’m a bit obsessed. Keep going with the podcasts and keep the site news coming!! I have noticed until yesterday that the amount of news on your site has reduced to only updates every 3 days or so.. nice to see more news coming now.

I thought you may be able to help with with an issue I have had … maybe answer it on the podcast? or not? I can’t be the only person with this issue though…

Anyway just over 6 months ago I moved from O2 to Vodafone and ported my number to a 12 month contract. I did this and moved from a Iphone to a HD2… I don’t remember having any issues with the HD2 although I didn’t have it for long and generally use my phone for data rather than voice. Since then I moved back to an Iphone (still on voda) and noticed a problem. If I had a 3g connection and tried to make a call the call failed  9/10 times or may ring once then cut off.

I thought it was probably the phone… and me being me moved to a Milestone (same issue)… then I moved to a Nexus One (same) then Iphone (still the same) .. then Nokia N900 and still had the same issue…. I called Vodafone and they said they changed some settings but it made no difference. I called again and they sent me a new sim card but it made no difference.

I have now (thanks to Andy) cancelled my Vodafone contract early and moved to Giffgaff… I have ported my number. I thought this might sort the issue but its still happening.

I have now ruled out the phone.. I have tried a network change and i have gone through 3 sim cards.

The only thing that has stayed constant is my number.

So.. the question is… why when i try and make a call (and it seems to be when i’m on 3.5g hsdpa) do I get a network busy signal when i try to make a call and what should I say to the network when I call them?

Hope you can help..

Chris.

Just a short e-mail to let you know I enjoy your show.

Things have changed a bit in the line-up over the last few years and I think its great to see the Modaco guys getting some discipline and regularity in their braodcasting lives.

Anyway, I was wondering about this great offer from 3 in the UK: a MIFI device for 70-ish pound sterling. Does it really work with a rebel SIM? I want to use it on the t-mobile 3g network in Amsterdam, do you think it will work? How did you set this up for Edward? Is he happy (with his MiFI)?

Met vriendelijke groet / Kind Regards,

Benjamin van Ruyssevelt

Listener Question:

I found your podcast a few weeks ago and I love it! But, tell James to sort his ‘happy shopper’ mic out ;-)   Muther Fukker! Anyway I have fixed it!

My current phone is a Nokia N85 (I’ve owned a few Nokias). I like the features and use most of them alot, I also don’t mind Symbian OS.

However, it is time for an upgrade!

I really fancy going the ‘touch screen’ route, though I’ve never had or tried one! But something tells me I’d be better off with a ‘forward facing qwerty’ as I do lots of messaging.

I’m a mechanic and my hands are often dirty and they are a bit chunky! I have narrowed the list to three handsets; HTC Desire, Nokia E72, and Blackberry 9700!

The Desire seems to be an amazing gadget with a gorgeous screen and nice apps.

Blackberry seem to be the ultimate messaging machine but the Nokia E72 seems to be a better phone?

I’m sure you lot will be very familiar with these phones, so your expert views are appreciated.

Sorry if this is one of a million ‘help me choose’ emails but……tough ;-)

Listener Questions

It’s nice to hear you talk about other tech like the Archos. I have the Archos 5 also and wish it had a phone built into it sorry it hear you have trouble with yours Gareth. Phones keep getting smaller and smaller, not counting the HD2. I want to have a media player that can playback videos on a decent size screen and be able to make calls without having a carry to devices. Know of anything that will do this?

I am not really a geek when it comes to smartphones but I have been visiting your site recently as I am due for an upgrade/new contract soon. My boss has put the idea of having one of the new HTC phones into my head (he owns a HD2)… I was 97% sure I wanted the HD mini but noticed that it won’t qualify for a windows 7 upgrade when the new OS is released. So does this mean I look forward to having a phone with a obsolete OS? Should I stick with the HD mini or should I go for something like the Legend?

Palm Pre review tomorrow-ish

Listener Question:

I have a million dollar question (again!) for all the team for a very

real situation

I have been using a PAYG Orange phone as I now work for two companies

and need a separate number.  I bought a £29 Nokia 2330 and, well

basically got £29 worth!

It is slaughtering me on call costs though and I’ve topped up three

times in the last couple of months and twice ran out while talking to

a client so I can’t continue with that arrangement.

I thought about getting a new contract for about £30 per month which

by the looks of it is the going rate for about 600 minutes , unlimited

internet and a decent phone.

Am I mad to do this, Andy hates contracts but i can’t shell out £400

just for a phone right now, but I could I suppose keep the nokia and

get a contract Sim (but where’s the fun in that!) and there doesn’t

seem to be much of an incentive to have the contract without the

hardware

I’m looking at the Hero but unsure of Android and the lack of updated

software, and also the HTC HD2 but then what about mobile 6.5?

I use windows 7 for work and also run a Windows home server so I

thought that the Windows may well fit in with all that but no-one

seems to rate it anymore.  The new phone 7 series looks awesome but I

need to sort these call bills out sooner.  Would the HD2 get an

automatic upgrade or would I have to pay?

I already have a 3G iphone for the other number which is now out of

contract and on “simlicity 20″ which is great, but don’t want to be

dull and have two iphones!

I got the impression that despite everyone slagging mobile 6.5 off,

you quite liked the HD2 Gareth?

What’s the best phone to recommend to my mate who’s having an affair!!??

A little background. My mate layed an egg when I recalled some of his

text messages from his n95 that he thought he deleted. He was looking

to upgrade to an iPhone, but as far as I’m aware, he won’t be able to

delete individual numbers made or recieved. Only entire call lists

which may rouse suspicion!? 2 phones is a no go apparently. And he’s

not eager to downgrade to an older phone. This got me thinking, what

phone would be simple. A silent ringtone for a certain number?

Obviously the wise thing would be to end it but I don’t think he’ll do

that either!!!! What do you rekon?

Listener email:

Hi Guys, have a question for you for the podcast. I’m on an economy drive at home and want to save some money and being a regular listener i think I’m asking the right guys. I have an iphone that it is out of contract and have dropped that down to the “simplicity 20″ to save £25 per month. I make quite a few calls during the day to mobiles and have racked up a bit of a bill on my BT landline. O2 is rubbish where I live so ive bought a cheap crappy PAYG nokia for £15 from phone4u. What is the best PAYG deal I could get to phone mobiles for the smallest amount of my hard earned?

Any Ideas.

ALso (Q 2) Andy, as I have an iphone that is now out of contract and unlocked, Am I able to get a second PAYG sim for it from Orange or O2 so that I can do that Rebel sim card thing with my 3 MiFI. Could I just ask Orange to send me a sim for an iphone, activate it myself, then pop my original O2 sim back in as it has my main number in it?

Have a good show and don’t forget to press that big red button that says ‘Record’! Sorry, couldn’t resist it!Thanks, found it this week – Ed

Reader question from Justin:

Sorry I know I’ve bombarded you with emails this last couple of weeks, but I’ve got a question.

Orange have just offered me a new handset to replace my tg01, one of those handsets is the htc hero. 3 or 4 months ago I would have bitten their hands of!. However, the tg01 appears to have increasingly calmed down of late and I’ve now got some great software running through it.

Thus the dilema! The hero appears lacking spec wise. So it no longer appears the stone bonker decision!

What do you think regarding the future of the tg01?

Should I get one and sell, then look elsewhere? I already have the iPhone 3gs, so this would be more a toy/pocket pc.

Thanks once again!!!

I have a Touch Diamond and have been offered an upgrade but the thing I love about my touch diamond is the stylus – being able to write texts and e-mails is fab – I just don’t think I could go back. I loved your review of the Touch Diamond 2 but you do say wait until Windows Mobile is updated – so do I just stick with this phone (it is a bit scratched especially where I have used the stylus so much without the screen guard) or do up upgrade???
