O2 rejigs again

o2, uk

o2

Following the last press release whereby O2 decided to rip off their customers they have pulled a bit of a U-turn following a backlash from dealers.

O2 was to do away with their 18 month and 36 month SME contracts by the end of March to include a 12 month fixed line promotion with all 24 month deals. Now, following a upset from the dealers, O2 has reversed its decision and will retain all its original packages at least until the end of the year.

The new tariffs will be available through it’s business gateway.

  • HTC Legend get priced on Vodafone

vodafone-htc-legend-details-priced-0Vodafone will be unleashing the HTC Legend shortly and several websites have begun pricing it. Whilst there are no official details on the Vodafone website Pocketlint are reporting that Vodafone will be pushing the tough little handset on some, quite frankly, attractive deals. Whilst most are 24 months there are a number of fairly good value 18 month contracts bragging a free handset. I will say that it seems a little tight for Vodafone to charge £1.99 on some contacts for the phone.

A Sim free version can be picked up for the modest sum of £399.99 here.

  • Nexus One coming to Vodafone in April

    GoogleNexusOne

The Telegraph is reporting that the Nexus One will launch on Vodafone in April for a non-disclosed price, though it’s "likely to be priced very similarly to comparable smartphones such as the iPhone." It’s no secret that Vodafone’s picking up Google’s Snapdragon-powered beast. Coincidentally, this is going to collide head-to-head with the European release of the Desire, HTC’s remix of the Nexus One with Sense and an optical pad thrown in, so it’ll be fascinating to see which of these monsters comes out on top at retail.

  • O2 revamping their tarrifs, but is there value?

    O2_set_to_make_announcement_about_iPhone_large

O2 has updated their tarrifs with a bit of a revamp that looks set to see some folks worse off in the long run. In a press release today, O2 announced their Sim only plans for the iPhone however there is much more going on behind the scenes.

O2 will launch a two-year Apple iPhone tariff for £25 per month. The tariff will include 100 minutes and unlimited texts. Handset costs are currently unknown. The iPhone is also expected to be made available with its Simplicity SIM-only tariffs for the first time, with the device available at full price.

However, O2 will drop its free unlimited bolt-on deal, previously available £35 per month or above deals. All O2 tariffs will now include unlimited texts only instead of other little perks like on-network calls, internet, weekend calls, texts and wi-fi. Their text bundles will also loose any picture message bundles. Voicemails will now be  charged at a rate of 10p per minute if outside of their minute bundle.

BlackBerry and other data centric devices will be hardest hit, as customers will be required to pay £7.50 for BlackBerry data or £5 for standard data. Little incentives and promotions to new customers including up to eight months free line rental on selected tariffs and handsets will be introduced.

They will launch its first unlimited calls and text deal for consumers. Costs will range from £45 per month on a 12 month Simplicity deal to £65 per month on an 18 month deal. Read on for the full press release:

  • Mobile Broadband bill from Orange for nearly £8,000.00

A university student ran up a bill of almost £8,000 on his mobile internet broadband abroad in one month because rules introduced last year to prevent this have taken nine months to implement.

Although EU rules will be introduced in the UK on 1 March to protect users against "bill shock", 22-year-old William Harrison (below) was initially told by Orange that it would have infringed the company’s customer privacy policy to monitor his usage.

Harrison, a third-year Nottingham university student, started a six-month internship in Paris last September and wanted temporary internet access in the flat he was renting there. He and his father, Roger, asked an Orange store in Hertfordshire about the best way to access the internet abroad and queried whether a dongle, a small piece of hardware that connects to a laptop or desktop computer allowing wireless internet access, would be suitable.

"The woman in the store said the dongle would work perfectly in France, especially for a short-term contract," says William. "She said there was a 3GB (gigabyte) limit on data use but that this would be ‘perfectly ample’."

In France, William used his internet account to access Skype, a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the internet, on a daily basis. "I was unaware of how expensive this was. On my computer at home it’s free," says William. He says he did not use the internet to download anything that would have been data-heavy, such as videos.

On 17 October, his first bill arrived. It was for £6,101.56. "I immediately questioned it and asked for the dongle to be blocked," he says. "But there was a further charge which covers the cost of the dongle use between the bill being sent and the dongle being blocked. I am now faced with a bill of £7,648.77.

"It is an absolutely awful situation, both in the short term because of the £8,000 debt and in the long term because the potential damage to my credit rating could be disastrous."

Roger contacted Orange on behalf of William to query the bill, and was told by a shocked operator that there should be a £40 monthly limit on dongle usage. However, what he was not told, and which Orange’s own operator did not seem to be aware of, was that this does not apply to overseas use.

"I sent Orange a cheque for £158.66, which is what I had worked out to be reasonable from the bill. However I never received a response from Orange."

He says: "I am concerned William was given unlimited credit. There was nothing to stop this going up to £100,000. I think it is wrong the way this [dongle] has been sold and that there was no ‘flagging up’ to highlight that a bill of this size was being built up. Even Orange said the size of this bill was exceptional. For my son, at his age, to be saddled with this amount of debt is terrible."

  • Vodafone’s Twitter attack

    voda

Vodafone is looking into a ’severe breach of rules’ by staff after an offensive ‘tweet’ was posted on its official Twitter account, Vodafone UK.

The offensive ‘tweet’ was posted at 15:47 and deleted shortly afterwards. Since then, the operator has sent out numerous apologies to its followers on the social networking site. Vodafone reacted quickly to the breach and posted an apology, just under an hour after the original post, which said: ‘We’re really sorry. A severe breach of rules by staff in out building, dealing with that internally. Please keep your faith in us.’

Only this week the operator was used as an example of a company using Twitter for good customer services by BBC programme Working Lunch. Followers of Vodafone UK on Twitter started ‘re-tweeting’ and asking Vodafone what had happened and have speculated that a disgruntled employee created the post.

One follower said: ‘Have I missed something???’

A Vodafone spokesman said: ‘This afternoon an employee posted an obscene message from the official Vodafone UK Twitter profile. The employee has been suspended immediately and we have started an internal investigation. This was not a hack and we apologise for any offence the tweet may have caused.’

  • Short smartphone survey

    download download

Jon from Clove.co.uk is looking for folks interested in Smartphones to partake in a short survey in regards to their smartphone views and desires. The results of which will be feature in a report Jon is writing as a research project for his business degree. If you have a few moments, why not fire through the survey, I did and it’s harmless. Here is what Jon has to say:

You may not be aware that whilst working for Clove part-time, I am currently completing my 4th year studying Business at Bournemouth University. As part of my final year work I have to complete a research project, also known as a dissertation. I have chosen to focus on the following topic:

"Does innovation provide competitive advantage to manufacturers of smartphones, with particular focus on HTC."

The project requires me to obtain primary data to use to assist in the investigation of the relationship between innovation and competitive advantage in the smartphone industry through a survey and also interviews.
Could I kindly ask that you post a link to my survey on your blog/forum to assist me in obtaining the quality feedback that I need.

Please, do not feel obliged to say yes, you can say no!

If this request is possible (I think your readers may find it interesting), then if you could provide them with the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/smartphoneinnovation

I do hope, in April or soon after, to be able to provide a full copy of the project to you and your readers. It will be a big project, but some may find it of interest, and it is certainly a different news post.
A point to note is, that whilst I use your contact details (with approval) through my employment at Clove, this study is not financed by nor will be used by Clove or HTC in any way.

Thanks for your time, I look forward to your response!

  • T-Mobile admits importing iPhones

    30534

Whilst most of the networks currently offer the iPhone in the UK, one of the networks has been selling them, unofficially. T-mobile have been importing European iPhone to sell to UK customers. One dealer said, while support from T-Mobile had been “fantastic”, he faces losing customers to O2, Orange or Vodafone because of iPhone distribution.

T-Mobile area sales manager for the south Lee Wales said: “In the past we did buy some iPhones in Europe because we were concerned customers would leave if they didn’t get the iPhone.

“We took the decision and it might have backfired because Apple wasn’t very happy. But we decided that retaining those customers was important. But it’s not our policy, and it has been two quarters since we last did this.”
