Windows Mobile 7, more details leaked
Mobile Crunch have received some supposedly reliable information on Windows Mobile 7 and if true, we are looking at Microsoft doing a full 360 degree turn on how open Windows Mobile will be.
First, Win Mo 7 is essentially a copy of the Zune HD’s kernel. It comes in one screen size and will work best on OLED devices. Microsoft will give official specs to hardware makers and force them to comply or else refuse them access to the OS. This includes a regimented screen and RAM size as well as a minimum processor speed.
Win Mo 7 has no background processing and will use an Apple-like notification service. There is no system resource access and no threaded processes. In fact, there is no customization at all.
Win Mo 7 will not run 6.x code. End of story. It is based on Silverlight and .Net. Everything save a few basic programs will not work under Win Mo 7. There is no expectation that this will be a “business device” and the focus is currently on games including some XBox Live functionality for gaming and messaging. There will be a Microsoft App store with an easy approval process.
So there you have it, if true Microsoft are making great moves to protect the operating system and shake off the reputation of soft reset hell, poor UI and all round bad experience.
I predicted that future Win Mo apps would only be available from their Marketplace a while ago and even asked them the question on the podcast when we interviewed Loke Uei
I personally think this is no bad thing, a stable Win Mo platform would be a great step forward.

Flipping direction looks like panic and a lack of focus.
Smells like the death of Microsoft’s mobile market to me.
As always Microsoft is releasing a patch in the disguised as a new UI instead of developing the de facto Smart phone platform. Anything short of this will only keep the iPhone the leader of the pack.
Every phone/platform that comes out and doesn’t make the iPhone look like old technology will only been seen as a failure. Us geeks will debate the pros and cons because its our favourite past time but your average Joe will in truth only see the failure to out shine the iPhone which regardless of the technology that comes out every month only releases a new phone every year.
Wake up Microsoft!!! and the rest of the world for that matter
Silverlight is multi threaded, so this rumour is unlikely to be true.
If it is true and they wont allow multitasking, then my patience with WinMo is done. And just as osx is about to allow multitasking too..
Multi-threading has nothing to do with it. IPhone is based on OSX and is more than capable to multi-task its just restricted by iphone. The problem with windows mobile is developers have been extremely lazy in many cases. They never close and for 90% of applications they never need to. This makes the OS slow, unresponsive and a poor user experience. Android tries to get a balance with both but ultimately the responsibility is with the developer. Apple have just taken this ability away.
Whatever the case, i havent bought an iphone because of the background restrictions, if WinMo goes the same, i wont be buying that either.
It will take a lot to get people back into buying Windoes Mobile phones, I’m sure Apple has been busy refining the experience further on the iPhone OS 4. I’m really looking forward to the Apple event to see what is going to hit the market. If there is a tablet I’m sure it will offer an experience like nothing else, if it didn’t they would not bring it to the market.
