Dension Gateway and iPhone 3G
We did a review of the Dension Gateway 100 using it with the original iPhone and it all worked perfectly. Now that I have the iPhone 3G I have been testing it out this morning and it is not good news. First off the Brodit holder that I have installed is a little tight but it should be fine as it is lined with a felt so it will not scratch the iPhone 3G. The worst part is when you plug the cable into the iPhone 3G and you are met with a warning message.
So there you have it, the iPhone 3G will play perfectly through the Dension Gateway 100 just as before but you cannot charge it at the same time with the supplied cable which is a real shame. Luckily the Dension Gateway 100 also comes with an AUX in connection and thinking about it this may be a better way of doing things as the audio out on the iPhone does have the shielding from RF interference where as the charging connection does not, downside of this is it means stripping out the car stereo again to get to it, cue skin loss from knuckles and the additional purchase of a cigarette lighter charger.

Hey Chris, I am having the exact same problem. Do you think Dension will have a new firmware update for this problem or do you think it’s a hardware problem?
I will be calling the Desion dealer in Montreal Canada for a solution. Enjoy your new iPhone 3G and the Bimmer.
I think it is a hardware problem it appears that Apple have changed the way the port on the iPhone 3G works, but having said that other chargers work fine, it is confusing but annoying, let me know what the Dension dealers tells you
Chris
After a little more research it appears that Apple have removed the ability of the iPhone 3G to charge via Firewire, apparently a lot of accessories use the pins on the iphone connector that firewire would use hence the lack of charging on the iPhone 3G, adaptors are rumoured to be coming, there is a thread at Apple that might be worth keeping an eye on here:-
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1597845&stqc=true
Thanks, I will check it out and i will let you know what happens through Dension.
I’m anxious to know if a fix is even possible! Please keep us up to date on what Dension says in regards to a fix, or if any pin adapters come out! I don’t want to use AUX as I bought and installed the Dension for the ability to use stereo controls. The battery life lasts me half a day on my iPhone with my usage and having the ability to charge in car will be a life saver!
Here is what I rcvd from the Main Dension Dealer in Montreal Canada. I hope this helps. Good luck everybody.

Sorry the main part did not go through. Here it is again.
Hi Gabe, This just in…
The iPhone 3G will only support 5V charging, which means that current GW300 v2 (GW32) and GW500 (with blue dock cable) will work properly. The current GW100 (GW15) will not charge, but the soon to be released 16 versions will be fine. Obviously all new products released from now will take account of the 5V charging requirement.
Hope this helps you…
Let me know what happens on you side.
Thanks,
Eric Massicotte

Dension Gateway 100
After reading this I was a little unclear so I called up Eric at AutoMobility.
He stated that a firmware update will be released soon on the Dension website in regards to the Gateway 100 and a blue cable will replace the existing cable that came with the unit.
This will fix the charging problem for the iPhone 3g. I hope this clears up this matter for Gateway 100 owners.

Hey, for those of you using the Gateway 100 with BMW E46 and Business CD and Gateway UI, when entering menus, does the iPod/iPhone ever get ’stuck’ in fast-forward, or rewind when exiting menus? I’m asking here because this is like the only place on the web talking about the gateway’s
I have the gateway 500 and an iphone 3G I purchased a replacement cable from dension which allows the ipod classic to be charged as this also only uses 5V to charge. The 3G iphone charges just fine with this cable. It would be nice to have full song/album listings on both though with the MB comand head unit
this is the part number for the cable IPO3DC9 $39.98 from discountcarstereo.com

Has anyone tried this yet?
I’ve got the Ice>link lite with the active cradle. I’m looking at the iPO3CR9 from discountcarstereo is it the same as the one posted above but the active cradle version?
Thanks
Some information about this active cradle and the iphone 3G woudl be very nice.
As Gabe predicted, all new Dension Gateway 100 (with part numbers starting with GW16XXX) support iPhone 3G charging. They seem to have modified the hardware, so I’m not sure if upgrading the firmware will be enough to make old Gateway 100s work.
You might also take a look at this blog: http://www.tunertricks.com/blog, they are investigating progress on iPhone 3G car integration.
This is the response I got from Dension about this issue:
If don’t have a Dension device I recommend you to buy a new GW100 (slightly redesigned hardware). The item number starts with GW16xxx and not GW15xxx.
The GW16xxx has been tested and works properly with iPhone 3G. WE are currently testing the iPhone 3G with the older GW15xx. The results will be available shortly at http://www.dension.com/dension_apple_matrix.html Please note: TExt will not be visible on your HEad Unit’s screen or on your cluster display.
Be very careful here I have been told that yes it will play your music but it will not charge your iPhone 3G, copy of conversation with UK Dealer https://www.ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk/
Chris: I have a gateway 100 that does not charge the iphone 3g, i have been told by dension that the new gateway 100’s with model 16xxx work with the iphone 3g
Chris: do you have these in stock
Will: Dension are correct in saying that the 16 will work with the iPhone 3g, however the kit will still not charge the phone
Will: This is due to the design of the iPhone 3g itself
Chris: yeah i know, what alternatives are they then as the battery is so bad
Chris: does the gateway 300 work
Will: Currently there is no option for 3g charging with any available kit
Will: it is a limitation of the phone itself, so it is highly unlikely an integrated kit with charging capabilities will be released
Chris: well i have read that the 300 and up work fine for charging
Will: the 300 is only different to the 100 by its USB capability
Will: No kits will charge the 3g phone
Chris: ok thank you
Will: It is a problem that alot of our customers face
Will: as the battery in the 3g phone is poor
Chris: yeah it is bad, and they took the firewire charging away from the 3g version hence the lack of charging
Will: exactly, it is fustrating for us as we do not sell the emount of kits we could do as we cannot offer the charging function
Chris: this is what dension told me

.
Will: This is correct, however your request for charging is not possible
Chris: so it doesn’t work properly then
Will: It does provide a fully integrated kit, yes, but it will not charge the iPhone, it will allow you to listen to your iPhone through your cars audio system.

You just need the new cable with the blue connector from Dension. Once you swap that for the original cable it all works fine, including charging the iPhone. I recently did it with mine.
