Windows Vista update ‘kills’ USB devices
Microsoft has admitted it is investigating reports that a recent Windows Vista security update causes havoc with some USB devices, but the software giant is yet to provide a fix for the cock-up.
The Windows Defender update was released last week, but some unfortunate Vista customers have claimed that their USB mice and keyboards among other devices refuse to work after the update is installed on their computers.
Microsoft had released the update to plug a security hole in its spyware blocker Windows Defender. The company said in a statement today:
“We are aware of concerns that a recent Microsoft update may be causing problems with USB devices. We are investigating the matter, and at this time, do not have any information to share.”

Probably that’s why my Htc Touch is refusing to sync over USB. “Device not Recognized” ! Thanks..I was at my wits end trying to figure out what was wrong.
hmm I’ve been having problems getting new hardware to connect (a digital camera and an MP3 player). In both cases Vista notices that they are plugged in, but for some reason it just can’t find drivers for it, and thus keeping me from connecting them to my pc (they don’t show up in “My Computer”
Is it possible that this is caused by this screw up aswell?
I knew It wasn’t my device that had the problem! It’s a problem with Vista! The only question I have is that why would people spend $500 dollars on a brand new windows vista computer (which i did) and later come to find out that their drivers and devices arent working anymore from stupid Vista? why? whats wrong with this picture?
Also another problem I’ve reconized is that for the internet explore 7 for windows vista theres another problem! It didnt happen when i first got this computer but after a day using it I noticed my flash player suddenly “disapeared”. I no longer have a flash player therefore having difficulty with some site features I enjoy going to. Whats going on here?!?!
I ended up completely re-installing my vista ultimate operating system because the CD player and Burner stopped working and gave me some garbage about the CD being damaged and telling me to use error correction. After spending hours on the phone to HP and screwing around trying to update drivers I gave up and reinstalled vista ultimate. Everything went fine until it started updating and then after service pack 1 – I was back to square one with no CD burner or player. After I restored it back to the day before the update -everything was fine. I am no longer updating my vista. I lost a week of work screwing around with it. The tech support is sucking and I am wondering why the programmers are not properly testing their updates. I’m considering Mac!
